Another grass snake found in Utah!
In the early morning hours of May 10, 2018, a grass snake was found in Riverdale, Utah. This is the second such snake discovered in the state this year; on March 2, another grass snake was found in West Valley City.
Grass snakes are fairly common in the eastern United States but are not typically found in Utah. The harmless snakes can grow to up to five feet long and feed mainly on small prey such as rodents and frogs.
While grass snakes can be beneficial to farmers by preying on rodents that might damage crops, they can also be a nuisance by invading homes or gardens. Residents are advised to be vigilant if they encounter a grass snake and to contact local authorities if one is sighted.
Mysteriously, two grass snakes found in Utah overnight!
Grass snakes, also called green snakes because of their chosen habitats, are a common sight in North America. These thin and long reptiles often enter gardens and meadows in search of food, which usually consists of worms, insects, and amphibians.
While grass snakes present no major threat to humans and animals, they can inflict a nasty bite if provoked. However, this is rare as the vast majority of grass snake bites occur during accidental encounters with farmers while the snakes are engaged in their natural activities.
Interestingly, two grass snakes were discovered in Utah overnight on February 26th 2019. While it is not unusual for these reptiles to be found in the state - as they range from British Columbia all the way down to Central America - it is still a mystery as to how they got there.
One theory suggests that they may have hitched a ride on a truck or boat travelling through the state, but this has yet to be confirmed. Officials at the local zoo are currently investigating the matter and will hopefully provide some answers in the coming days or weeks.
Grass snake sightings on the rise in Utah!
Grass snakes sightings are on the rise in Utah, with people increasingly coming across these long and slender snakes. While they may be a little creepy to see, grass snakes are actually harmless and pose no threat to humans.
Most of the time, grass snakes will try to slither away when they see people, but sometimes they will coil up and hiss. It is important not to be alarmed if you see a grass snake; simply give it some space and it will go on its way.
Grass snakes typically eat small animals like lizards, frogs, and rodents. They can be found in a variety of habitats, including fields, gardens, forests, and even suburban neighborhoods.
So why are grass snake sightings on the rise in Utah? It is possible that the increase in sightings is due to the warming climate, which is making it easier for these snakes to live in more diverse areas. It is also possible that the population of grass snakes is increasing due to successful conservation efforts.
Whatever the reason may be, it is always exciting to see these beautiful creatures in their natural habitat. If you happen to see a grass snake while hiking or exploring in Utah, be sure to take some pictures and share them with us!
